EKLAVYA SCHOOL, AHMEDABAD

Class: 4

Subject: Maths  Week No.:
Topic: Equivalent Fraction Period No.:

Objective / Contents:

To introduce  Equivalent Fraction.

Methodology:

The term equivalent should first be clarified to the children. Equivalent means “equal”. So equivalent fraction of a number is the same fraction but represented in a different manner, depending on the number if parts the whole is divided into. Eg. ½ = 2/4 = 4/8 = 8/16.

To make this concept clear to the children the following activity can be done in the class.

Take a strip of paper about 2 cm by 8 cm. (You can try out with various denominations keeping in mind the last fraction that you want to do. In this example we will go upto 8/16.)

Now the children will fold the strip in the following manner.

They will fold once so the fraction formed in the coloured part is ½.

They will fold the paper a second time so the fraction formed is 2/ 4

They will fold the paper a third time so the fraction formed is 4/8

They will fold the paper a fourth time so the fraction formed is 8/16.
