PROJECT REPORT

VILLAGE SCHOOL REBUILDING PROJECT OF EKLAVYA, AHMEDABAD

1.   INTRODUCTION

As Gujarat takes up the massive task of rehabilitation/rebuilding, a coordinated, concerted effort is required from organizations and individuals having expertise in different areas. Eklavya’s strength lies in the area of school education, teacher training and general management. Eklavya’s partners in the project, The Shri Ram School, Delhi and Core Emballage Limited, re-inforce these strengths. Hence it has been decided to take up a rebuilding activity related to education.

Further, the project seeks to be of an enabling nature – that is, one that helps the local people to rebuild their lives (rather than simply ‘giving’ something to them, one-time) Hence continuous involvement of the local people, through dialogue, and their participation in multiple ways in the rebuilding process are key to the project.

The project duration will be about two years – this is the time frame over which Eklavya and the other partners will be actively involved with frequent visits and close interaction. Towards the end of the period, the project partners will wean themselves away, after setting up self-sustaining mechanisms which will help the local population to continue the work.

The project involves:

·        Rebuilding the school in a village in which the school building has collapsed. Beyond the physical rebuilding, the effort will be to set up a high quality school that can serve as a role model to schools in the district, state and beyond in better times too.

·        Doing teacher training for teachers of the school and schools of the surrounding villages. This would be an important activity to maintain and improve academic standards. If this activity goes well, this training centre may become the hub for the entire district.

In order to mobilize funds to take up the above activities, the Eklavya Education Foundation Earthquake Relief Fund has been started, and fund collection efforts are in progress. It is estimated that about 103 lakh rupees (USD 225,000 ) will be required for the above project.

The above work will be done in Aadariyana village, Patdi taluka, Surendranagar district. The rationale of selecting this village is presented next.
